Inflight Magazine Skymall Files for Bankruptcy

TWL_2015_jan_blog16SkyMall, the quirky in-flight magazine that has captured airline passengers’ attention for more than 25 years, has filed for bankruptcy protection. Steep competition from online retailers like Amazon, coupled with more relaxed rules regarding the use of electronic devices during flights, has caused sales from the once-popular catalog to flounder. Recognizing that passengers are entertaining themselves on smartphones and tablets, several major airlines, including Delta and Southwest, decided late last year to stop stocking seat pockets with the magazine.  Despite the bankruptcy filing, SkyMall’s CEO told The Wall Street Journal it hopes to find a buyer and retool the brand to operate on a smaller scale.
