Palos Heights, Cook County, IL 60463

Generally regarded now as one of the most desirable places to live in Chicagoland with its quiet tree-shaded neighborhoods of well-maintained homes and lush parkland, Palos Hills is a burgeoning community entity of banks, boutiques, cozy shops, and restaurants, with a great and growing cultural base for its 12,500 residents to enjoy.

Situated 17 miles south-west of Chicago Loop, Palos Heights is the “baby” of the Palos Township villages being incorporated as late as 1959. Little is known about the area except that there was only one road running through the swampy area – 127th street – and that an 1851 map shows no farmhouses whatsoever.

However, a community began to gradually develop and thrive from 1935 when the Robert Bartlett Building Corporation purchased open farmland adjacent to Harlem Avenue with the aim of pulling real estate sales out of the Great Depression doldrums.

Naming the area Harlem Heights, Bartlett’s endeavors succeeded with the town being renamed Palos Heights just 24 years later when the vote for incorporation was carried at the fourth attempt and the rest, as they say, is not so much history as history in the making!
