Willow Springs, Cook County, IL 60480
Situated near the Des Plaines River the area known as Willow Springs was once a burial ground for Native Americans before Polish, German, Italian, and Irish settlers turned the region into a cosmopolitan community.
Canal and railroad work formed the major industry of the pioneering days with ice harvesting taking place in the 1870s and 1880s. The village was incorporated in 1892 with Mt. Forest and Willow Springs merging to become Spring Forest until 1937 when the name was changed to Willow Springs.
The 1940 census shows a population of just 948, but as of 2000 there are now over 5,000 residents in the 4 square miles of rustic loveliness which no doubt led to Willow Springs being featured in the 2006 movie The Lake House starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
Known as a place of great rustic beauty with its many ravines and moraines left from the ice age, Willow Springs is 17 miles southwest of the Loop and has long been a favorite picnic locale for Chicagoans since way back in 1840 when they used to flock to the 500-foot wide expanse they dubbed Lake Willow Springs.
