About La Grange

The village of La Grange is settled just outside of western Chicago.  With a population today of over 15,000, it is an ideal spot for people to live in the suburbs but still have access to the metropolitan area.  The village, formerly known as Kensington, in Cook County, was once settled by Robert Leitch in 1830 and was followed by settlers looking to move out of the city of Chicago. After the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the population continued to thrive and was officially incorporated into an organized village in 1879 by Franklin Dwight Cossitt, a successful wholesale grocer and businessman.

The Village of La Grange Historic District was named to the National Register of Historical Places in 1979.  Some of the original architecture of the homes and businesses in the downtown area are what gives it a quaint feel.  However, there are also many choices for residents in things to do as well as to make a living thus allowing the residents to be self-sufficient from greater Chicago.
